Attention Through the Body: Why We Move Slowly

When people hear the word Yin, they might think about flexibility.
Long-held stretches.
Relaxation.
Perhaps slowing down at the end of a busy week.
All of those things may form part of someone's experience.
But they aren't the primary reason we practise Yin at Neuro Still.
For us, the body provides something extremely useful:
A place to put our attention.
A sensation in the leg.
Pressure against the floor.
Movement through the ribs.
The feeling of breathing.
Warmth.
Tingling.
The subtle changes that occur after we've released a posture.
Our Yin practice deliberately slows things down enough for us to notice them.
Because underneath the movement, we're practising the same fundamental skill that sits at the heart of Neuro Still Meditation:
Notice. Return. Repeat.
This is one of the most important distinctions in the Neuro Still Yin Method.
We're not trying to achieve the deepest possible stretch.
We're not competing with the person next to us.
And we're certainly not using discomfort as evidence that a posture is somehow "working".
Instead, movement gives us an opportunity to explore attention through physical sensation.
As we slowly enter a posture, we might notice:
Where does sensation begin?
Where is my weight?
What changes as I move?
What happens to my breathing?
Where has my attention gone?
Once we're settled, the movement becomes quieter.
And now there is something to observe.
Rather than thinking about the body from the outside, we begin paying attention to the experience of the body from within.
This brings us to an important part of the Neuro Still method:
Interoception.
Interoception broadly describes the sensing and representation of signals arising from within the body.
That can include experiences related to breathing, heartbeat, temperature, tension, hunger and other internal physiological signals.
It's sometimes described simply as "body awareness", although scientifically it's considerably more complicated than that.
And it's an increasingly interesting area of research.
A 2025 meta-analysis examined 29 randomised controlled trials involving 2,191 participants and found that mindfulness-based interventions produced a small-to-medium improvement in self-reported interoception.
That finding is relevant to Neuro Still because many mindfulness practices repeatedly direct attention towards bodily experience.
But there is an important qualification.
When researchers look at more objective measures of people's ability to accurately detect bodily signals, the evidence becomes much less clear.
A recent systematic review covering 41 studies found only a small association between mindfulness and objective measures of body awareness, with substantial uncertainty and methodological limitations.
That's why we don't tell somebody:
"This practice will improve your interoception."
Instead, we do something much simpler.
We provide opportunities to practise noticing bodily sensation.

There is a temptation in wellness to attach a biological claim to everything.
"Slow movement activates this."
"This posture stimulates that."
"This position releases stored emotion."
That's not how we want to teach at Neuro Still.
We don't need to make those claims.
Our reason for slowing movement down is much more practical.
It gives us something to pay attention to.
If you move immediately from one position to another, much of that movement can happen automatically.
Slow it down and suddenly there is information available.
Weight shifts.
Muscles engage and release.
Pressure changes.
Breathing changes.
Sensation develops.
And attention has somewhere to go.
So when a Neuro Still teacher says:
"Move slowly enough to notice."
There isn't a hidden spiritual meaning behind it.
It's an instruction in attention.
This is where scientific honesty matters.
There is substantially more research on yoga broadly, mindfulness, breathing and meditation than there is on Yin yoga specifically.
We therefore shouldn't take research from another practice and simply label it evidence for Yin.
There is, however, some direct research.
One randomised controlled trial involving 105 stressed adults compared five weeks of Yin yoga, a programme combining Yin with mindfulness and psychoeducation, and a control group.
Both Yin-based groups showed greater reductions in anxiety and sleep problems than the control group. The combined programme also showed improvements in reported stress and depression.
It's an interesting study.
But it's one trial.
It doesn't justify saying:
"Yin reduces anxiety."
It suggests that Yin-based interventions deserve further investigation.
And that distinction matters to us.
Between our major postures, we do something deliberate.
The movement stops.
The music stops.
And particularly during the earlier part of the session, we may introduce a small number of slower breaths.
One pattern you may hear is:
Breathe in gently for four.
Breathe out gently for six.
There is good evidence that slow voluntary breathing can influence cardiovascular autonomic regulation.
A large systematic review and meta-analysis drawing on 223 studies found increases in vagally mediated heart-rate variability during slow breathing, immediately following slow breathing, and following multi-session interventions.
Heart-rate variability is influenced by autonomic regulation, including parasympathetic cardiac activity.
But there is another important distinction here.
We sometimes hear breathing described as though the nervous system has two buttons:
Stress ON.
Parasympathetic ON.
Human physiology doesn't work quite like that.
One breath with a longer exhale doesn't magically "switch on your vagus nerve".
So we don't promise that.
We use comfortable slower breathing because there is reasonable physiological evidence behind slow breathing as a regulatory practice.
And then we stop controlling the breath.
We allow it to become natural again.
Because ultimately, this is still an attention practice.

This is one of the defining features of Neuro Still Yin.
Throughout the movement and postures, there may be music.
Then we release.
And the room becomes quiet.
For approximately two minutes, we deliberately reduce the external input.
No next song to follow.
No immediate next posture.
And increasingly, very little instruction.
Just the body.
The breath.
Sensation.
And whatever the mind decides to do next.
This isn't empty time between movements.
It's part of the practice.
Something interesting often becomes apparent when external stimulation decreases.
The mind doesn't necessarily become quiet.
It might start planning.
Remembering.
Judging.
Creating a conversation.
Thinking about dinner.
Wondering how long is left.
That's okay.
We're not trying to prevent thought.
We're practising becoming aware of where attention has gone.
And then we return.
Perhaps to warmth in the legs.
The movement of breathing.
Contact with the floor.
A pulsing sensation.
Or simply the feeling of the whole body being still.
Attention → Wandering → Awareness → Return.
Exactly the same cycle we practise in meditation.
The anchor has simply changed.
At the beginning of a Neuro Still Yin session, you'll hear more from the teacher.
We help establish attention.
Notice the ground.
Notice your weight.
Notice the breath.
Notice where sensation appears.
Return when attention wanders.
But as the practice progresses, something changes.
We begin removing ourselves from it.
There are fewer breathing instructions.
Fewer reminders.
Longer periods of silence.
That's deliberate.
Because ultimately, we don't want someone's attention to depend entirely upon another person continuously telling them where to put it.
The teacher provides the structure.
The participant develops the practice.
You begin to notice for yourself:
I've wandered.
And then:
I can return.
There's another important principle in how we teach.
If you experience tension around your hips, we don't need to tell you that you're "storing an emotion" there.
If you experience tingling, we don't need to construct a story about "energy moving".
If your body feels different after a posture, we don't need to tell you what that sensation means.
Instead:
Notice what's actually there.
Pressure.
Warmth.
Coolness.
Stretch.
Pulsing.
Tingling.
Movement.
Stillness.
Or perhaps very little at all.
There is growing scientific interest in mindfulness and bodily awareness, but the relationship between mindfulness, subjective interoception and objective interoceptive accuracy remains complex.
We don't need to fill those scientific uncertainties with explanations that haven't been demonstrated.
Sometimes noticing is enough.
From the outside, our two practices can appear very different.
In Neuro Still Meditation, you're predominantly still.
In Neuro Still Yin, you're moving and holding postures.
But underneath, they're closely related.
Meditation:
Breath → Attention → Wander → Notice → Return
Yin:
Movement → Sensation → Attention → Wander → Notice → Return
Both provide an anchor.
Both expect attention to wander.
Both ask us to recognise when that has happened.
And both practise returning without treating distraction as failure.
Research across 111 randomised controlled trials involving 9,538 participants has found small-to-moderate benefits from mindfulness-based interventions across several areas of cognition, including executive and sustained attention.
That research isn't evidence for Yin specifically.
But it helps explain the broader scientific basis for deliberately training attention.
The body simply gives us another environment in which to practise.

This might be the most important part.
Because we're not practising awareness of our legs simply to become extraordinarily good at noticing our legs.
We're not practising breath awareness simply to become experts in breathing.
And we're not practising Yin simply to become more flexible.
The session is a training environment.
Life is where we hope some of that training becomes useful.
Perhaps you're walking somewhere and actually feel your feet touching the ground.
Perhaps you notice you've picked up your phone without consciously deciding to.
Perhaps somebody you love is speaking and you realise your attention has disappeared into your own thoughts.
Perhaps you feel tension appearing in your body during a difficult conversation.
That moment of noticing creates an opportunity.
Come back.
To the body.
To the conversation.
To the person.
To what's actually happening.
Modern life asks a great deal from our attention.
Much of that attention is directed outward.
Screens.
Messages.
Information.
Work.
Other people.
And sometimes into our own thoughts about what happened yesterday or what might happen tomorrow.
The body offers something different.
It is happening now.
The breath you're experiencing isn't yesterday's breath.
The pressure beneath your feet isn't tomorrow's sensation.
It's here.
That doesn't make bodily awareness magical.
It simply makes it useful.
Because whenever attention has disappeared somewhere else, sensation provides somewhere immediate to return to.
We move slowly enough to notice.
We allow sensation to become an anchor.
We breathe.
We become still.
We remove some of the noise.
And then we practise staying with what remains.
Not perfectly.
Not without thought.
Not always comfortably.
But with curiosity.
Again and again.
Because the posture isn't really the destination.
Attention is the practice.
And ultimately, neither Yin nor meditation is about escaping from the life waiting outside the room.
They're opportunities to practise becoming more available to it.
To ourselves.
To the people around us.
And to the moments we might otherwise miss.
Notice. Return. Repeat.
And as Neuro Still develops beyond attention, we add the second part of the practice:
How do we meet what we've noticed?
With ourselves.
And with other people.
That's where compassion enters.
