Why Neuro Still uses meditation, breath, movement and silence to practise one of our most valuable human capacities

Our attention rarely stays in one place for long.

A conversation is interrupted by a notification.

We start one task and remember another.

We pick up our phone without consciously deciding to.

Someone we care about is talking while part of our mind is already somewhere else.

None of this means there is something wrong with us. Mind-wandering is a normal part of human cognition.

But at Neuro Still, we're interested in a simple question:

Can we become better at noticing where our attention has gone—and bringing it back?

This is the idea behind two of our core practices: Neuro Still Meditation and Neuro Still Yin.

They look different.

One happens predominantly in stillness.

The other uses slow movement and physical sensation.

But underneath, we're practising the same fundamental capacity.

Attention.


Meditation: the practice of returning

There is a common misconception that successful meditation means having no thoughts.

That's not how we teach it.

During a Neuro Still meditation, we deliberately place attention somewhere—often on the sensations of breathing.

Inevitably, the mind wanders.

We think about tomorrow.

Remember something from yesterday.

Plan.

Worry.

Daydream.

Then something important happens:

We notice.

And once we've noticed, we can return our attention to the breath.

That cycle—

Attention → Wandering → Awareness → Return

—is not a failure of meditation.

It is part of the practice.

Neuroscience research offers an interesting window into this process. A well-known brain-imaging study by Hasenkamp and colleagues examined different stages occurring during focused meditation.

The researchers identified different patterns of brain activity associated with mind-wandering, becoming aware of mind-wandering, shifting attention back, and subsequently maintaining attention.

In other words, what subjectively feels like “I've become distracted again” involves a series of distinguishable cognitive processes.

This is one reason Neuro Still teachers repeatedly say:

The return is the practice.

What happens to the brain during focused attention meditation?

We need to be careful here.

Meditation is sometimes described online as though scientists have discovered a simple switch between a “bad” Default Mode Network and a “good” Executive Control Network.

The reality is considerably more interesting.

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis of functional MRI research into focused-attention meditation found consistent involvement of three major functional networks:

  • the Default Mode Network

  • the Salience Network

  • the Executive Control Network

These networks have different roles in internally directed thought, detecting relevant information, and directing and maintaining attention.

Rather than trying to permanently “turn off” one network, meditation appears to involve dynamic interaction between systems involved in wandering, noticing and redirecting attention.

This fits closely with the experience we train at Neuro Still:

Can meditation actually improve attention?

This is where we should distinguish possibility from certainty.

Meditation isn't a magic cognitive upgrade.

Results vary according to the type of practice, duration, population and quality of the research.

However, the overall evidence is encouraging.

A large meta-analysis of 111 randomised controlled trials involving 9,538 participants found that mindfulness-based interventions produced small-to-moderate improvements across several cognitive domains, including executive attention and sustained attention.

That doesn't mean 22 minutes of meditation instantly transforms someone's ability to concentrate.

It suggests that attention is something that can be influenced through repeated training.

And that's exactly how we approach it.

Not as a state to achieve.

As a skill to practise.

Why bring the body into it?

Attention doesn't have to be trained exclusively through sitting meditation.

The body gives us an extraordinary source of present-moment sensory information.

Pressure.

Temperature.

Movement.

Breathing.

Muscular sensation.

The feeling of the ground beneath us.

The perception of signals originating within the body is often discussed under the term interoception.

This is one reason our meditation moves beyond simply observing the nostrils.

We progressively notice the breath through the chest, ribs and abdomen before broadening attention into a body scan.

Research into mindfulness and interoception is developing.

A recent meta-analysis of 29 randomised controlled trials involving 2,191 participants found a small-to-medium positive effect of mindfulness interventions on self-reported interoception.

However, research using more objective measures of body awareness is much less certain. Another recent systematic review found only a small association, considerable variation between studies and important methodological limitations.

So our position is deliberately measured:

There is evidence that mindfulness practice can influence people's awareness of bodily experience, but the science of interoception is still developing.

Why end with a body scan?

Towards the end of a Neuro Still meditation, attention changes.

We've spent time focusing relatively narrowly on the breath.

Now we widen.

Face.

Jaw.

Shoulders.

Arms.

Chest.

Abdomen.

Pelvis.

Legs.

Feet.

Eventually, the whole body.

Again, we shouldn't overstate what five minutes of body scanning accomplishes.

A systematic review and meta-analysis examining body-scan meditation by itself found only a small effect on mindfulness compared with passive controls and did not find sufficient evidence for broad health-related benefits from body scan alone. The authors also highlighted low study quality and substantial heterogeneity.

That's useful information.

Science isn't valuable only when it confirms what we want to hear.

At Neuro Still, the body scan has a specific role within a larger attention practice: broadening the attentional field from one relatively narrow anchor towards whole-body sensory awareness.

We don't need to claim more than that.

And what about Yin?

Neuro Still Yin approaches attention differently.

Rather than sitting still and repeatedly returning to the breath, we use:

Movement.
Sensation.
Breath.
Stillness.
Silence.

During a posture, physical sensation provides an attentional anchor.

You might notice pressure through the ground.

A sensation through the legs.

The movement of the ribs.

Temperature.

The changing quality of a stretch.

Then we release the posture.

And something unusual happens.

The music stops.

For approximately two minutes, we deliberately remove some of the external stimulation.

Early in the session, we may begin that pause with a small number of slower breaths before allowing breathing to return to normal.

Then we become quiet.

The intention isn't to make something happen.

It's to notice what is already happening.


Why use a longer exhale?

You'll sometimes hear us invite a comfortable breath in for four and out for six.

There's a reason for this, but again it's important not to exaggerate it.

We shouldn't say that one 4:6 breath “switches the body into the parasympathetic nervous system.”

Human physiology isn't an on/off switch.

However, the broader evidence around voluntary slow breathing is substantial.

A systematic review and meta-analysis drawing on 223 studies found increases in vagally mediated heart-rate variability during slow breathing, immediately following a breathing session, and following multi-session interventions.

Heart-rate variability is influenced by autonomic regulation, including parasympathetic cardiac activity.

So we use slower, comfortable breathing as a support for settling and regulation, rather than claiming it produces a guaranteed physiological state.

And importantly:

Why the silence?

This might be the most distinctive part of Neuro Still Yin.

During movement, there is music.

After the posture, the music disappears.

The teacher gradually speaks less.

The participant is left with sensation, breath and silence.

Why?

Because eventually attention has to become your practice, not the teacher's.

If somebody constantly tells you where to place your attention, you're following instructions.

So across a Neuro Still session, we gradually provide less input.

The silence isn't something to endure between exercises.

The silence is practice space.

Movement gives attention something to feel.

Stillness gives attention space to notice.


Two practices. One skill.

This is why Neuro Still Meditation and Neuro Still Yin belong together.

They aren't identical practices.

And we're not claiming that Yin and focused-attention meditation produce identical neurological effects.

Instead, we've designed them around a shared principle.

During meditation:

Breath → Notice → Wander → Return

During Yin:

Move → Feel → Notice → Wander → Return

Both ask the same underlying question:

Where is your attention?

And both offer the same response when it inevitably moves somewhere else:

Come back.

Not aggressively.

Not perfectly.

Just again.


Why does any of this matter outside the practice?

Because becoming brilliant at noticing your nostrils isn't really the point.

Neither is becoming brilliant at Yin.

The practice is the training ground.

Life is where we hope the skill becomes useful.

Can you notice when you're half-listening to someone you love?

Can you notice the automatic reach for your phone?

Can you recognise that you've been reading the same paragraph while thinking about something completely different?

Can you notice the sensation of walking outside?

Eating dinner?

Hearing someone laugh?

Being with your family?

Our wider philosophy at Neuro Still is:

Attention + Compassion = Connection.

Attention is where we're beginning.

Learning to notice.

Learning to return.

Later, our teaching will increasingly explore compassion: how we meet what we notice in ourselves and other people with understanding, while recognising that compassion does not mean abandoning healthy boundaries.

Because ultimately, we're not practising attention simply to become better at concentrating.

We're practising so that we can become more available.

To ourselves.

To the people around us.

And to the ordinary moments that make up a life.

Notice. Return. Repeat.

That's where we begin.
